pushing for net-zero emissions

The latest climate promises for 2030 place the world’s temperatures to rise by 2.7 degrees within this century. These net-zero commitments are expected to shave off 0.5 degrees off this target. This is possible only if actions are taken on the pledges.

Australia is pushing for net-zero emissions by 2050. It plans to achieve this by investing in low-emissions technologies including solar power.

International & National Renewable Energy Target
Australia has adopted a 2050 net-zero emissions target. There are many programs at play in Australia and at the international level to achieve these results. The key national programs are as follows:
Renewable Energy Target Scheme
This program focuses on generating additional electricity from renewable energy sources to bring down emissions.
Large-scale Renewable Energy Target Scheme
This program promotes investment in renewable energy power stations including solar farms. A large-scale generation certificate (LGC) is formed against each megawatt-hour of electricity that gets produced.
Small-Scale Renewable Energy Scheme Target
This program rewards households, businesses, and the community to adopt small-scale systems including solar panels, wind, solar water heaters, and hydro systems.

International Renewable Energy Targets

Australia leads the world in the adoption of solar power in households. The percentage of free-standing households with solar systems is more than 20%. In 2020, there were 2.4 million rooftop systems producing 10.7 GW of power. In 2021, the capacity increased to 13 GW. Australia has set a target of achieving 50% PV grid-connected residential systems.
